INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS
At Resilience, we offer Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, a transformative approach that helps individuals connect with all parts of themselves. This therapy is based on the understanding that we each contain different “parts” or subpersonalities that form an inner family. By helping clients understand and harmonize these inner parts, IFS promotes healing, self-compassion, and personal growth.
Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS is grounded in the concept that each person has a core “Self”—a wise, compassionate, and resilient center. Our various parts, which may carry emotions or beliefs from past experiences, can sometimes be in conflict, leading to stress or unwanted behaviors. Through IFS, clients learn to acknowledge, understand, and integrate these parts, creating greater inner harmony and fostering healing from within.
Key Components
IFS incorporates several core principles and techniques, including:
Identifying Parts: Clients work to identify and understand the various parts within them, each carrying unique roles and emotions.
Understanding Protector Parts: IFS recognizes “protector” parts that attempt to keep us safe by preventing us from feeling pain. These can include “manager” parts that handle daily tasks and “firefighter” parts that react in moments of distress.
Healing Wounded Parts: Known as “exiles,” these parts carry painful memories or vulnerabilities. Therapy focuses on creating a safe space for these parts to heal.
Self-Leadership: Clients are encouraged to connect with their core Self, a calm and compassionate center that can guide and care for all parts.
Unblending: This process involves separating the Self from the parts, helping individuals observe their parts without being overwhelmed or controlled by them.
